“Everything will line up perfectly when knowing and living the truth
becomes more important than looking good.” – Alan Cohen
In our modern society this quote rings particularly true. We brush layers of glossy paint over our ‘negative self image’ in an attempt to hide our fears from the world. Under the paint and this negative self image, lies our often dormant and uniquely powerful ‘authentic self’, your natural state of being in the first years of life.
Well known personal coach and hypnotist Paul Mckenna calls it the ‘bling-bling factor’.
If we spent some time scratching away at the layers of glossy paint we cover ourselves in, we reveal our authentic self, the self that many of us decide to cover up as we grow into adulthood.
My 5 step transformational program to Live Your Purpose is designed to help uncover your authenticity and the purpose of life for you.
If any of the below 7 signs are starting to, or have been present in your life, the purpose of life for you could be knocking at your door. Pay attention to it, open the door to it. Otherwise it will only get louder until it eventually kicks the door in.
1. You need constant external motivation
When you feel as though you’re in need of constant motivation in order to move ahead, or at least keep afloat, this is the direct opposite of what living authentically is about. When you’re truly doing something that you love, you’ll be in what psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi calls a ‘state of flow’. When you’re in flow, time slows down, you feel clear, calm, confident and know exactly what to do and when to do it.
A great question to ask yourself is: if you know you couldn’t fail, what would you do?
2. You’re always wanting to escape and distract yourself at work
Do you yearn for the weekend? Are you struggling with energy Mon-Fri and feel a sense of peace, excitement and increased energy when it’s Friday or the weekend? Are you distracted by Facebook every 10 minutes, wishing you were somewhere else?
Sure, work is important to pay the bills, but if this is you, you should definitely start to explore what life purpose means to you. Don’t let this drag on for most of your life, explore it now so that your work, purpose and authenticity have a strong chance of being aligned.
3. When it comes to the important things you procrastinate
You know deep down that your’e not moving ahead, you’ve hit a ceiling. You think about positive change in your life and how important this is, but you find your self too busy to apply your self to it. Sometimes the more resistance you have towards acting on these impulses, the more important they are to find your purpose of life.
4. You feel jealous of others
When you’re living your life purpose and living authentically, it’s impossible to feel jealous of what others have. You are what you do and love. You don’t compare yourself to others on a ‘success’ metric, because you already are successful. You feel happy, fulfilled, clear, inspired and guided by your inner compass.
5. You feel comfortable
There is a difference between being comfortable and living contently. If we’re too comfortable, just going through the motions of the same old routines every day without thinking about it, it could mean that you’re ‘hiding’ in a comfy corner somewhere. If you’re hiding, life and its circumstances will find you instead if you finding it.
When you find your challenges through growth, you’re progressing but pushing through your boundaries. As the saying goes ‘if you’re not growing, you’re dying’.
“Until one is committed, there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back, always ineffectiveness. Concerning all acts of initiative (and creation), there is one elementary truth, the ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans: that the moment one definitely commits oneself, then Providence moves too. All sorts of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred. A whole stream of events issues from the decision, raising in one’s favour all manner of unforeseen incidents and meetings and material assistance, which no man could have dreamt would have come his way. I have learned a deep respect for one of Goethe’s couplets:
Whatever you can do, or dream you can, begin it.
Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it!”
William Hutchison Murray
6. You always put other people’s purpose ahead of ahead of yours
When we aren’t living from the power of authenticity, it is very easy to be drawn in by powerful personalities. All your energy, skills and talent will be focussed on building someone else’s dream. This doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t partner with others and be part of a collaborative community, where we can all help each other succeed in our goals. What it does mean, is not to let your light be hidden under the shadow of others. Your authentic self is more powerful than you know, when you’re living from it, you’ll be guided by what can only be described as a higher source, connected to an inner compass inside you.
7. You are very critical of others
It is common psychology to know that what we don’t like in others, can often be a reflection of what we dislike about ourselves. The common dislike about ourselves can stem from our own self-criticism, where we know we aren’t living authentically, have ‘failed’ and so we get caught in a cycle of personal criticism, a criticism that we prefer to project onto others.
When you are living your life purpose, living from your authentic self, where you find joy, peace, inspiration and power, there will be no criticisms to project onto others.
What would the world be like if everyone was living with purpose, if everyone was leading their best life, contributing their unique talents and skills for greater purpose?
When you are living a life of purpose, you feel happier, healthier and more fulfilled. You know what you want and why. When you are living your best authentic life, you are shining your light and leading the way for others, giving those around you inspiration, permission and encouragement to lead their best lives too.
